Lady of Balamand High School is a non-profit organization that operates under the auspices of His Beatitude John X. A school for "elementary, secondary and higher education alongside the theological studies" was established at Balamand in 1835 by a special decree (Faraman) of the Ottoman authorities. Although the Ottomans closed the school four years later, His Beatitude Malatius (Al Doumani) succeeded in reopening its doors in 1899,
During the period of the two World Wars, up until 1945, the School was closed and reopened several times. By that time, it had become known for its program for the preparation of clergy, and was named the Antiochian Orthodox Theological School of Balamand, although it did have students who were not seminarians.
We aspire to be a leading educational institution recognized for innovation, student success, and personal growth.
LBHS is dedicated to providing a nurturing environment where students are respected and given opportunities to develop their characters, values, and skills. The school’s curriculum fosters academic excellence while addressing students' physical, social, and emotional needs. LBHS aims to prepare students for success in an evolving global society by cultivating critical thinking, ethical leadership and cross-cultural understanding.
The School took a new turn in 1962 when His Beatitude Ignatius IV, then Bishop Hazim, came to Balamand as a rector of the Monastery and introduced a program of secondary education for all at Balamand. In 1970, Bishop Hazim seperated the Monastery from the theological school and moved at to an adjacent building. The school began to receive students from all the surrounding areas. A relatively stable and safe school environment at Balamand drew increasing number of students from Tripoli, Beirut, and Mount Lebanon during the years of hostilities in Lebanon, and the student body grew from 90 students in 1974 to 1850 in 1999. The success of the school created a demand for expanded facilities and opportunities for its students, and the establishment of the University of Balamand increased calls for an English section at the School to better prepare students for their university education. The first phase of a new campus is nearing its completion on 100,000 square meters of the upper section of the Balamand highland, a location that highly endorses the educational atmosphere. The design of the 25,000 square meters of new buildings blends with the surrounding harmoniously and is projected to accommodate up to 3000 students in both French and English sections.
